Exploring Cayo Santa María’s surroundings: Rumba time & sugar tour

Among the amalgam of races that are part of Cuban culture, there is a patent African influence. The history and religious professions in Cuban folklore are intimately related to our African roots. Our traditions and music have so much of the black continent on them that even in the most unexpected places of the island you will find a piece of a slave past.

Villa Clara province doesn’t escape this reality so I would like to dedicate this blog post to talk about two excursions, operated by Gaviota Tours from Cayo Santa María that will connect you with our African past.

Rumba time

Depart by bus early in the morning and arrive in Caibarién around 10am to enjoy the music of the Municipal Band and free time in the city park. Take a leisurely time to dance to the beat of the drums while you learn about the Cuban folklore together with the people of Caibarién. Do not miss the opportunity to take part in the traditional cultural activity at the establishment ‘’La Ruina’’. Before returning to the hotel, you will visit the state La Cabaña and enjoy lunch at the Restaurant El Curujey.

Sugar tour

Depart by bus at 9 am and get ready for a truly different experience. First, you will visit a former sugar mill, which is now turned into the Museum of Sugar Industry, where the history of sugar industry from 1850 to 1998 is summarized. Take time at the entrance to refresh with a taste of Guarapo, the delicious typical Cuban drink obtained from the sugar cane. You will also receive a bottle of Ron Mulata as a souvenir. Coming up next is the most exciting part of this trip: a ride in a steam locomotive to the city of Remedios and the opportunity to learn more about this village, also home of one the oldest Cuban traditions. To complete this amazing journey, at your return to Cayo Santa María you can mix rum and pure cigars. You will arrive at 14.30 hrs.

Cuban idiosyncrasy is well known for its religious foundations. On the other hand, the sugar industry is always something to relate with the country’s history and also with development and economy. These excursions are perfect to combine learning with fun and exciting activities. Your road to Cuba, your road to great experiences!
