Jardines del Rey: Hemingway’s favourite destination

Jardines del Rey: Hemingway’s favourite destination

The keys, islands and islets found to the north of the island of Cuba were named by the Spanish –between 1513 and 1514- as the Jardines del Rey archipelago, in honour of the king at that time, Ferdinand the Catholic. These spots, which have existed for over five centuries, hold the treasures of pristine beauty, an unrivalled diversity of landscapes and seascapes, ideal for a unique holiday in this destination.

This archipelago is the largest and most numerous of the four surrounding the island of Cuba. Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo –two of the most outstanding islands in this group– offer excellent natural settings for sailing activities and recreation, with secluded beaches and clear, warm waters, with their greenish-blue hues. The proximity of a coral reef, stretching 400 kilometres and considered by experts to be one of the largest in the world, is another of the attractions particular to this region. Due to the high level of conservation of their marine and terrestrial ecosystems, Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo and their neighbouring islands belong to the Buenavista Biosphere Reserve and were a source of inspiration toErnest Hemingway.

But reading “Islands in the Stream” by the American writer is not enough. Although the great author depicts, with unrivalled accuracy, the aromas and colours of the place, you have to experience Jardines del Rey for yourself. This popular tourist location, a group of keys and islands on the northern coast of Cuba, has become one of its main destinations, after Havana, Varadero and Holguín.
