Right on the beach stands the magnificent Meliá Las Américas, an All-Inclusive Five Star resort, for adults only. With direct access to the Varadero Golf Club, the only 18-hole golf course in Cuba, par 72 and 6, 850 yards , designed by the famous architect Les Furber and recommended by the Professional Golfers’ Association of Europe.
More than enough reasons for this hotel to host every year one of the country’s most important golf events: The Meliá Cuba Golf Cup.
From 23 to 26 October, with the participation of more than 150 people between players and companions, and the representation of 15 countries, including Canada, Argentina, Chile, France, Colombia, Nigeria, China and the Dominican Republic, the event took place with a special celebration to mark the fifth year of this very successful tournament.
101 players competed in this stroke-play tournament in the categories of Ladies with a handicap of 0 – 25, Ladies with a handicap of 26 – 36, Gentlemen with a handicap of 0-14 and Gentlemen with a handicap of 15-26.
The programme includes one day of practice and two days of competition, with prizes awarded to those with the highest and second highest net and gross scores in each category, as well as the following skills: proximity to the hole, straightest drive and longest drive. This year, for the first time, a “Long Drive” Tournament was also held, with a prize for the winner.
The Highest Net Score in the First Ladies’ Category was achieved by Nicole Regimbald from Canada, and in the Second Category by Anita Chan, also from Canada. In the men’s competition, Kong Xiangzhoug from China and AyoubKhan from Canada were the winners of the highest Net score in the 2nd and 1st Category for Gentlemen respectively.
The prizes were presented at a smart and friendly dinner at the Restaurante La Robleza, where participants praised the hospitality and excellent organisation of the event, as well as becoming members of a large golfing family.
