We are thrilled to share some news that many of our friends have been waiting for: in Varadero, the iconic Sol Palmeras hotel will reopen its doors on July 1st. After an intense period of work to fine-tune every corner, this beloved four‑star, beachfront resort returns to remain that “home away from home” that so many people have enjoyed over the years.
We have been working with our guests in mind to create a space that is even more comfortable, inclusive, and modern, paying special attention to two of the busiest areas: the pools.
The heart of the resort – its magnificent main pool – has undergone a major renovation. The old tile has been replaced and its layout redesigned with new access levels. This change not only modernizes its look but also makes it easier for older adults or people with reduced mobility to get into the water. Along the same lines, the second pool has also received upgrades: new tiles and the installation of modern underwater lighting.
Aware of the importance of universal accessibility, we have removed architectural barriers in this area by modifying the bridges that connect to the pool bar – they now have a smooth, step‑free surface. We have also improved safety in the kiddie splash pool with a new railing, so parents can relax a little more while the children play.
The renovation work has reached many of the common areas. For example, the dome of the main lobby has been restored with waterproofing, maintenance, and a fresh coat of paint that enhances its impressive structure. Outside, new grass has been planted in the gardens surrounding the pools and the walkways have been repaired. To ensure peace of mind for our guests in any situation, backup generator sets have been installed in the bungalow area.
These improvements come to a hotel that is not just a place to stay, but a piece of modern Cuban history. Opened on May 10, 1990, it was the first joint‑venture company and the first hotel managed by Meliá in the country. Since then, it has been a benchmark for family tourism on the Varadero beachfront.
